Unless another source is indicated, the information for the biography presented here was obtained from the letters, photographs and the family memorial publication that are in the collection of Walter S. Sutton materials in the Clendening History of Medicine Library, Kansas University Medical Center. This material has been the basis for symposia honoring Dr. Sutton and it provided information for the excellent paper "Walter S. Sutton and the physical basis of Mendelism" by McKusick (1960). Betsy Sutton, wife of Walter Sutton's nephew of the same name, was very helpful in providing new information about the Sutton family and in verifying facts in materials already collected.
