What is an ACE?
An ACE is an Administrative Center for Excellence. This type of administrative model was first presented in 2011 following a Huron review of administrative services at the University of Kansas Medical Center that included the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions. A survey was sent out to all administrative staff to assess the type of services that staff provided, level of satisfaction, and areas of concern, etc. It was determined that:
Furthermore, there is concern that many departments lack experienced and inadequately trained administrators to manage their departments especially in areas relating to overspent grants, retroactive funding changes, effort reporting, cost-sharing, monitoring grant expenditures, etc. Other issues affecting the sustainability of the current administrative model include budget cuts, loss of staff, and lack of tools.
What is the ACE's Mission?
ACE's mission is to offer the highest level of administrative services and staff that will be able to handle a wide range of tasks with a level of professionalism and trust to give faculty the opportunity to become better teachers, researchers, and collaborators to train the next generation of doctors and scientists, attain world-renowned recognition through research discovery, and make KUMC a top-notch institution through increased funding, prominence, and health care delivery.
What are the ACEs' Objectives?
The purpose of the ACE is to provide an efficient and experienced team to better meet the needs of faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff by consolidating the business functions into one administrative service center, providing excellent administrative services, simplifying systems, and streamlining technology to reduce the time required to accomplish tasks.

Who does the ACE staff report to?
No. Departments will continue to be overseen and managed by a department chair. Department programs including graduate and medical education, promotion & tenure, financial oversight, events, cores, and employee recruitment will continue as they normally would. The ACE will provide support for these programs to fulfill the needs of the departments they serve.
ACE directors will report to the Assistant Dean of Research Operations in the School of Medicine.
