"There's No Crying in Med School!"; Major Society tackles the role of feedback in medical education

In September, Major Society students and faculty gathered for lunch and to join in discussion with a panel of KUMC physicians and PhD's, titled: "There's No Crying in Med School! The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback in Medical Education."

Panel members consisted of Associate Professor and Clerkship Program Director in the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Mitzi Scotten, Associate Professor and Residency Program Director in the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Lisa VanSaghi, Director of the Center for Health Behavior Neuroscience at KUMC, Dr. Cary Savage and Associate Director of Family Medicine and Major Society's very own Director, Dr. Jana Zaudke. Director of the Department of Pediatrics and Major Society member Dr. Chet Johnson not only helped to organize the event but also acted as moderator.

Together, students and physicians discussed the roles of feedback and constructive evaluation of student doctors in today's medical training. Questions addressed included: How can students better prepare to mentally accept and utilize feedback during their clinical rounds? How does one give feedback to his/her attending? What are some ways our attendings might better help students learn through feedback? What is the physiology behind receiving feedback and why do people react differently to being "put on the spot"?  How can we overcome our physiology to best utilize our critiques? 

Each panelist gave a short presentation addressing these topics and the floor was then opened to questions. Both students and faculty members agreed the meeting was successful in addressing the role of feedback and exploring ways to make the most out of a feedback experience. Several attendees encouraged the society to continue the discussion at a future meeting.

On Thursday, October 25^th, Major Society is partnering with their colleagues in Murphy Society to listen to a presentation on how changes in national health care legislation can impact the day-to-day lives of physicians in a multitude of clinical settings.  The presentation - "How the Affordable Care Act will Affect Me"- will be made by Suzanne Schrandt, Senior Analyst and Strategy Team Leader at the Kansas Health Institute. We hope to see everyone there!
