Delp Does Diabetes; JayDoc Night

By Delp Student Leader Trang Pham

Delp Society had a great turnout for Diabetes night October 30 at the Jaydoc Community Clinic. We want to thank our fabulous Delp faculty and enthusiastic student volunteers for joining us. With teamwork and a lot of patience (AND patients, hah), we had a great experience learning about Diabetes from each other, our Delp doctors, and of course our patients.

What the ACA Means to Us
By Delp Society Student Leader Mallory McGinnis

Delp students at lunch meeting
The Delp leadership asked Dr. Mary Zimmerman from the Department of Health Policy and Management to speak on the subject of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The topic was of particular interest to the student leadership because of the pertinence to our future as practicing physicians as well as trying to get correct information to the students and faculty.  Dr. Zimmerman was excited at the chance to talk about the topic and be able to provide some clarity about the associated misconceptions that have developed. The topic has taken the academic society community by storm!  Dr. Zimmerman gave a brief overview of the ACA citing the core interrelated issues with our current healthcare system as cost, access and quality.  She noted that cost, access and quality are a continuous part of healthcare but discussed how the ACA helps to address them. Dr. Zimmerman addressed what she thought were the key elements of the Affordable Care Act in addition to the changes to Medicare and the costs of reform.

Delp Society Kick-off Lunch Meeting

By Delp Society Student Leader Trang Pham

Delp Panelist at October lunch meeting

Delp Society started off the academic year with a study skills session on August 30th, 2012. We recognize how difficult it can be to transition into medical school and finding a study technique that works well for each individual can take some time.  We invited M2s and M3s to sit on our panel for this session.  Our panelists, Alicia Gingrich, Christine Cook, Jonathan Baalman, Brian Chalmers shared their study techniques in preparation for not only module exams but also Step 1 and how they balance school with their own personal lives and commitments. By the time of the meeting, the first year class had already experienced their first Foundations of Medicine exam. We hope this session provided some guidance on different study styles that may be helpful in processing overwhelming amounts of information and also in preparation for the upcoming Step 1 exam.
