Advising Info - Faculty
Thank you for volunteering your time and effort to be a part of the Academic Societies and to serve as a faculty advisor. You play an important role in the development of students and these pages are designed to give you assistance in the advising process.
Faculty advisors are expected to meet with their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year advisees twice each year - once per semester. You can find your assigned advisees by going to your Society's web page, then "faculty" and then clicking on your name.
Your advisee is responsible for contacting you to arrange a meeting time. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes with each advisee. At the end of the meeting, similar to precepting certification, please sign the form (electronic or otherwise). The student will upload the form to JayDocs which will certify that you have completed this required session.
You should plan to guide the session, but you need not be overly formal or specific. Foremost, this is a chance to check in with the student and find out how they are doing. Your meeting should primarily be a conversation, one which focuses on the student's progress - academic, personal, and professional. Even if a student appears to need minimal advising, these meetings and questions can help inspire reflection and further growth. Here are some suggested questions and topics:

Students are sometimes guarded in the responses and presentation during advising sessions. It may be helpful to remind the student that the meeting is not graded and their disclosures are completely confidential. As a faculty advisor you will not be asked to provide the details of your conversations with your advisees.
The links of the FAQ and Resources page may be of assistance in preparing for your advising sessions and in directing students to the best available sources of assistance at KUMC. The AAMC has additional materials on advising that may be of assistance.
Students must complete two discrete advising sessions per year
The fall semester advising deadline for M2 and M3 students is Friday, October 6, 2017
The spring semester advising deadline for M2 and M3 students is Friday, March 9, 2018.
