S.J. Enna, PhD

S.J. Enna, Ph.D., joined the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2005 and has been associate dean for research and graduate education since 2007. He is professor of physiology and of pharmacology. In his role as associate dean, Dr. Enna is responsible for cataloging and allocating resources, in particular laboratory space, among the research faculty in the School of Medicine, and assists in the identification and preparation of training grants in support of the graduate program.

Research in his laboratory is aimed at defining the molecular, biochemical and pharmacological properties of brain neurotransmitter receptors, in particular those associated with amino acid neurotransmitter substances. Recent work has been aimed at examining the regulation, expression and function of ÿ-aminobutyric acid B (GABA B) receptors in the brain. Current studies include an examination of GABA-B receptor subunit expression in human brain autopsy material obtained from individuals who had suffered from psychiatric disorders.

He is currently chair of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Publications Committee and Secretary-General of the International Union of Pharmacology.

Recent honors include: Torald Sollmann Award (2009) from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation Award for Excellence in Pharmacology (2005).

He received a bachelor's degree biology from Rockhurst University and a master's and Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
