Dr. Michele Mariscalco

Dr. Michele Mariscalco was named Associate Dean for Research in October 2010 and in that role is responsible for the oversight of the research activities for the KU School of Medicine–Wichita. Before coming to KU, she was Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Mariscalco completed medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Her pediatrics residency and pediatric critical care fellowship were completed at the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Programs in Houston. Her research focus has been on the developmental biology of inflammation.

She has been active in resident and fellow education. She was the program Director of Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Training Program, and the Director of Fellowship Research at Baylor College of Medicine. While there, she was the program director of one of the few NIH-funded T32 Research Training Programs in Pediatric Critical Care in the United States for 10 years. She has been active locally, regionally and nationally in preparing trainees and faculty for careers in academic medicine with a focus on research development. She led the Institutional Review Board at Baylor College of Medicine for 10 years, and was on the protocol review committee for the General Clinical Research Unit at Texas Children's Hospital for 15 years.

In 2011, Dr. Mariscalco received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Alumni Association, University of Dayton in Ohio. In 2010, she received the Barry A. Shapiro Memorial Award for Excellence in Critical Care Management from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. In 2009, she received the Award of Excellence in Teaching in Research from the Baylor Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Mariscalso is a member of the National Advisory Committee Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program and a member of the External Advisory Committee of the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network. She also has served on the Subboard of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, American Board of Pediatrics, and was Chairman from 2009 to 2010.
