Dr. Dennis Paul Valenzeno is Associate Dean for Medical Sciences and Chair of the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center - Wichita. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum for first- and second-year medical students on the Wichita campus. The inaugural class of first-year medical students on the Wichita campus began their studies in August, 2011. In addition, Dr. Valenzeno is leading an effort to explore and develop new curricular initiatives for future implementation.
Dr. Valenzeno previously served as Associate Dean and Director of Alaska WWAMI - Alaska's Medical School at the University of Alaska Anchorage and concurrently as Assistant Dean at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He has been actively involved in curricular design for medical education and has a long record of publication and extramural research support in photobiology related to reactive oxygen.
Dr. Valenzeno earned an M.S. in physics and a Ph.D. in physiology from Case Western Reserve University. He completed a postdoctoral position at Emory University, studying photodynamic effects on ion transport across lobster axon membranes using double sucrose gap voltage clamp techniques. His research efforts continued as a faculty member at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City where he rose through the ranks to full professor studying photobiological effects on ion transport, including patch clamp studies of cultured cardiac cells.
Prior to moving to Alaska, Dr. Valenzeno was the Director of Medical Education in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center where he crafted the academic calendar that converted the first year of medical education from a traditional, course-based system to a more modern organ-system organization.
Dr. Valenzeno has served as Senior Associate Editor of Photochemistry and Photobiology, as Secretary-Treasurer of the International Union for Photobiology, as Editor of the Digital Photobiology Compendium, and as Principal Investigator for the first NIH-funded Center of Excellence at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
