Dr. Walling has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters. She is a busy editor and reviewer for national journals. She also mentors students, residents, faculty and physicians on publications. She is an LCME site visitor, a Fellow of the Harvard Macy Program for physician educators and a test question writer for NBME. Dr. Walling received the Thor Jager MD Award at KUSM-Wichita in 1992 in recognition of her representation of the "compleat physician," the 1993 KUSM Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Classroom Teaching, the KUSM Student Voice Award in 2001 and the KUSM W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2004. In 1995, she was elected to Fellowship in the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. She received the "Larksfield Place Treasure" award in 2004.
Dr. Walling received her undergraduate and medical degrees from St. Andrew's University, Scotland. She did internships in surgery, medicine, obstetrics, gynecology and coronary care at Dundee Teaching Hospitals, Dundee, Scotland. Her postdoctoral studies were in public health medicine through the Southeast Thames Regional Health Authority and London Teaching Hospitals. Her thesis was accepted by the Royal College of Physicians in 1980.
