In July 2000, Dr. Allen B. Rawitch was named Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In that role, he is responsible for the offices of Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Postdoctoral Affairs, Institutional Research and International Programs. In his role as Dean of Graduate Studies, he is responsible for the oversight of all graduate programs and graduate student issues for the medical center. He serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the medical center and is a member of the Council of Chief Academic Officers at the Kansas Board of Regents.
Dr. Rawitch came to KUMC in 1975 as associate professor of biochemistry. Since then, he has served in dozens of roles at the medical center. Dr. Rawitch has conducted research in the study of polypeptide and protein hormones and has been a strong proponent for building KUMC's research capabilities.
Dr. Rawitch has been consistently recognized for teaching excellence. In 1998, he received both the KU Chancellor's Award for outstanding classroom teaching and a W.T. Kemper Fellowship Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2000, he received the Bohan Teaching Professor Award and has received seven awards since 1991 from Student Voice, a student-based teaching awards program.
Dr. Rawitch received his doctorate in biological chemistry at UCLA and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois. He taught for six years at Kent State University before coming to KUMC.
