Professional Background
Carla Sabus, PT, PhD, has a clinical background in acute care practice including trauma, burn, and neuro rehabilitation. Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy programs, she serves as chair of the admissions committee and DPT curriculum committee. Sabus currently teaches physical therapy intervention which introduces all the basic physical therapy handling skills, therapeutic exercise, and mobility training, and she serves as instructor in research in evidence-based physical therapy practice for both the DPT and post-professional DPT programs. Sabus continues clinical practice in the KU Medical Center’s interdisciplinary ALS clinic and at The University of Kansas Hospital.

Academic Background
After beginning her academic career with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Briar Cliff College, Sabus immediately transitioned to graduate study and completed a Master of Science in physical therapy at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2008, she completed her post-graduate work at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., with a Ph.D. in Education. Since that time, Sabus has held an appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the KU Medical Center.

Research Focus
Sabus’ research pursuits are in innovative teaching practices, bridging academic and clinical education, inclusion of evidence-based practice in DPT education and physical therapist practice, and the diffusion of innovation in the context of physical therapy practice.
