Shelley Barenklau, CRNA, DNP, is a clinical assistant professor and the patient simulation coordinator for the KU Department of Nurse Anesthesia Education. She practiced nurse anesthesia throughout the Kansas City metro area for eight years before joining the department in 2005. Barenklau is responsible for both didactic and clinical instruction for nurse anesthesia students at all levels.
Barenklau received a bachelor's in nursing from the University of Kansas in 1989 followed by a master's in nurse anesthesia at KU in 1996. While in graduate study, she received the Agatha Hodgins CRNA Memorial award for outstanding accomplishment. Barenklau completed her doctorate in nursing practice from the KU School of Nursing with a health professions educator certificate in 2011.
Barenklau is a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Kansas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the KU Alumni Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International.
Clinical and Academic Focus
Barenklau presently teaches basic principles of anesthesia practice and co-teaches advanced theory in anesthesia. She is the coordinator and an instructor for all patient simulation training. She also engages in clinical instruction at the main campus and the ambulatory surgery center.
Barenklau’s areas of research interest focus upon airway management, patient simulation and education, interprofessional education, patient safety, malignant hyperthermia, and health/wellness.
