Success Stories: Tian Zhang
Tian Zhang, RHIA
Class of 2014, Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management
Home town: Overland Park, Kansas
Tian began college wanting a major that offered her applicable clinical knowledge, information technology, and health care management and regulation. She found exactly that in the health information management degree.
“It offers so many paths after graduation and really opens up the field for many opportunities,” she says.
Tian works with hospital providers to design and build electronic medical records systems. She credits her education at KU for giving her the skills in health care systems, regulation and clinical information she needed.
“KU’s HIM program gave me very valuable real-world experiences by being able to learn EMR systems such as Cerner and Epic during classes. We also had numerous internship opportunities and the chance to develop close, interdisciplinary relationships with other departments, such as nursing.”
She credits those experiences with enabling her to make a smooth transition into her role at Cerner, and she believes her education gives her more credibility in day-to-day work with clinical staff.
The many internship opportunities offered by the HIM program paid off for Tian. During the summer after her junior year, she interned at Cerner and was offered a full-time position upon graduation.
“You can say I did not have to stress about my job search,” she says.
