Success Stories: Seth Katz

Seth Jeremy Katz, M.P.H., RHIA
Assistant Administrator, Information Management & Program Execution
Truman Medical Centers
Class of 2005, Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management

Home town: Prairie Village, Kan.

Seth’s health information management specialization is in health care revenue and information systems. He was drawn to the financial side of HIM because revenue plays a huge role in how the hospital is paid for services. With the requirement for electronic medical records, information systems are vital. The chance to blend both revenue and information systems has created an ideal job for Seth.

A 2005 graduate of the KU health information management program, Seth says his degree and credentials helped him excel in his career. Through his education he gained the skills and background to understand the clinical and business operations of a health care institution. He was drawn to the program after interning in a research lab. He quickly realized biochemistry wasn’t what he wanted to study, but HIM gave him the opportunity to work in health care and management. The small classes in the program provided lots of interaction with his classmates and professors. Best of all, he was so well prepared he had a job offer before graduation!

“HIM is one of the best degrees possible for those who want to work in health care, but don’t want to be pigeon-holed in just the clinical or information technology side,” he said. “HIM professionals really sit at the apex of a hospital’s clinical, business, financial and operation departments. The HIM program gives you a skill set heavily marketable for a variety of career options.”
