Matthew Gray, RHIA, CHDA
Health Information Management Site Manager
SCL Health – St. Francis Health
Class of 2012, Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management
Home town: North Berwick, Maine
Matthew Gray was drawn to health information management by the opportunity to simultaneously work in two in-demand fields – health care and technology. His role as manager of the Health Information Management department at St. Francis Health, a hospital in the SCL Health system, allows him to do just that.
Matthew’s diverse role requires him to manage staff members who update electronic medical records, supervise analysts who review documentation to meet the rules, regulations and standards of the hospital, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and The Joint Commission, as well as oversee clinical documentation specialists who ensure quality and compliance within medical records. He also has the opportunity to work with various departments and committees, such as coding and transcription, compliance and the committee on Joint Commission Accreditation.
For Matthew, what he most enjoyed about his education at KU was the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with many current applications that could be incorporated into real life scenarios.
“KU offered me tool and skills that I can use in the daily operations of my job, says Matthew. “I feel like KU’s experienced faculty incorporated real life situations and scenarios that would be applicable in many health care settings.”
In addition to the HIM course work, Matthew also interned at Watkins Health Center. Two months after graduation in 2012, he had an HIM job, which he credits to his education and internship.
