Renee' Rowell, MS, RHIA, CCS, joined the faculty in the Department of Health Information Management in October 2012. Previously Rowell was at the Office of the National Coordinator in the Office of Interoperability and Standards where she helped implement HITECH legislation in Washington, D.C. She also provided guidance to the State of Nebraska through the state-designated Regional Extension Center. Rowell has a long history of leadership and excellence in health care including more than 20 years in health information management and health informatics.
Students in KU's program benefit from Rowell's significant experience with industry standards, as she teaches HEIM 520 Legal Aspects of Healthcare, HEIM 435 Pathophysiology, HEIM 230 Medical Terminology, HEIM 360 Records Documentation, and HEIM 567 Performance and Quality Improvement.
In addition to her employment at KU, Rowell also serves as a private consultant and participates in numerous speaking opportunities at both the regional and national levels.
Rowell received her bachelor's degree in business administration from Peru State College, Peru, Neb., and a master's degree in health services management from Clarkson University, Omaha, Neb. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in postsecondary and adult education; her research interest is in health information technology and interprofessional education. She also holds industry credentials of Registered Health Information Administrator and Certified Coding Specialist.
