Clinical Interests

Judy Bielby, MBA, RHIA, CPHQ, CCS, FAHIMA, brings to the program a focus on, among other interests, healthcare classification and terminology systems; accurate and consistent application of coding rules, conventions and guidelines; and semantic interoperability.

Professional Background

Bielby has over 25 years of experience in the health care industry including coding, compliance, risk management, quality management, survey preparation, documentation improvement, and various special projects. Through her work as an independent contractor and health record coding consultant, Bielby is able to stay current in the field and provide relevant experience to students. She has worked on numerous projects involving hospitals, state entities, national organizations, and federal government. She has extensive coding experience at several hospitals located in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Academic Background

Bielby received a bachelor's degree in medical record administration from the University of Kansas in 1987 and an MBA from KU in 1995.

Bielby has served in a number of local, state, and national professional organizations including the American Health Information Management Association, Kansas Health Information Management Association, Missouri Health Information Management Association, Kansas City Health Information Management Association, and others. Service includes presentations, elected office positions, and participation on several committees.

Professional Honors

Bielby was honored with the 2016 Stata Norton Distinguished Teaching Award. Determined by a vote of the school's faculty and students, the award recognizes excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the profession. She also was selected as the 2015 Distinguished Health Professions Alumna.
