Norbert Belz, Ph.D., RHIA, is a registered health information administrator with extensive experience in telemedicine/telehealth, reimbursement and health information technologies. Since July 2012 Belz has served as director of the KU Department of Health Information Management and was promoted to chair May 2015.
A clinical assistant professor in the program since 2008, Belz has taught many courses, including legal aspects of health care, health care delivery systems, and reimbursements and topics in health information management. He also has provided graduate-level instruction in health care delivery systems and held a joint appointment in the KU Department of Occupational Therapy Education. From 2006 to 2012 he also worked with the Center for Child Health and Development at KU Medical Center in various interdisciplinary teaching and training capacities.
Belz received his bachelor's degree in health information management from Saint Louis University and a master's degree in health services administration from the University of Kansas. In 2015 Belz completed his doctorate in health policy and management from KU.
Prior to his faculty appointment to the department, Belz worked in the Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth at KU Medical Center where his responsibilities included project management, strategic planning, and the day-to-day management of the programs and budgets. He also served as director for numerous federal, state, and foundation grants.
