Faculty Onboarding: In your first month(s)

In your first month or so you’ll want to explore these resources

New Employee Orientation

The Office of Human Resources is located in room 1044 of the Delp building. The office hosts the online new employee introduction site which provides information helpful prior to your arrival and in your first week of work. This is must read material!

  1. Prior to your first day: Select the button that describes your role (faculty/staff/resident, etc.) to download a packet of forms tailored for your position. Descriptions of the relevant forms are provided.
  2. Next steps before you start: About five days prior to your first day of work, bring your completed forms to the Employee Service Center. After your first day of work, you can register your car with parking services at KU Medical Center.
  3. Your first week and beyond: You’ll attend your new employee orientation session and be given access to the myKUMC Intranet.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Employment, located in the Fairway North building, Suite 3000, 4330 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Fairway, Kansas, provides many resources on its website.

myKUMC intranet

Your KU Medical Center network username and password provides access to the myKUMC intranet portal. This site supports training activities, viewing pay stub information, accessing benefits and payroll information, campus news, and much more. It provides online access to services based on your role on campus and as a university employee.

Once you have accessed the myKUMC intranet, the menu options presented in the gray bar at the top of the page unfold to guide you through a broad range of useful information:

Technology

Computers, mobile devices, and campus wireless connectivity: please speak with your administrator to determine any immediate needs, then contact the school's information technology support staff for additional help in installing software required for connecting to university networks, establishing email and calendar scheduling services, etc.

A. R. Dykes Library of Health Sciences is open to university faculty, students, and staff (ID badge access may be required). The library offers a student gathering and studying environment, with areas for quiet and group study, access to computers and printing services, electronic testing, and virtual databases (PubMed, CINHL, etc.).

Mentorship

The Teaching & Learning Technologies staff will be quite helpful in guiding you through using the technology available in your classrooms, using the Blackboard education portal, developing and administering computer-based tests, and scheduling room reservations.

Student-Related Services

The Office of Student Services is located in Dykes Library and provides support for the following areas:

Counseling and Educational Support Services – This office is located in G116 of the Student Center building, and these services are focused on serving students needs, but knowing the extent of supports available for those of your students who may need them is an important element in supporting student learning.

Additional Campus Resources for Employees

Human Resources: If you have not spoken with a member of this office, you should do so soon. They will help you navigate through benefits, payroll, and related systems. Note there are periods of time during which some activities must take place, with access to those rescources very limited or nonexistent once the window closes. These include, for instance, signing up for retirement, annuity, investment, and health insurance coverage. 

Parking Services: Speak with your department administrator and other faculty members to determine the parking strategy most suited for your needs. Be cautious when using street parking in surrounding neighborhoods, paying close attention to time limits and personal safety.

Shuttle bus service is available for transport to near and remote parking lots, and to the Westwood campus

Security escort service: At this site you may request a personal escort from campus police, within a defined geographic area and during specific hours.

Kirmayer Fitness Center: Located on the southwest side of campus at the intersection of Rainbow Blvd. and Olathe Blvd., this 50,000-square-foot facility offers cardiovascular and strength training equipment, racquetball/squash courts, basketball court, group fitness studios, a suspended walking/jogging track, and a 25-yard aquatic pool, as well as a number of health and wellness and instruction for boths groups and individuals.

Kansas HealthQuest is a series of programs offered to State of Kansas employees to incentivize participation in health and wellness activities.
