Provider Eligibility Requirements

• Full-time and part-time faculty from The University of Kansas School of Medicine (all campuses) are eligible to provide Kansas Locum Tenens (KLT) services in the specialties of Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
• Physicians in Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency programs affiliated with KU School of Medicine are eligible to provide KLT services, providing they have:
  • Completed one year of residency training
  • A full license issued by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts
  • A DEA certificate
  • Certificate of insurance
  • Their residency program director's authorization to provide locum tenens services

Register as a Provider

To register as a KLT  provider, an eligible physician must complete the appropriate form below. Resident physicians must comply with all KU Medical Center policies and procedures regarding participation in the KLT program.

Malpractice Insurance for Resident Physicians and Fellows

Effective July 1, 2012: All KU resident physicians and fellows are required to have individual malpractice insurance to participate in the KLT program.

To assist in reimbursement, providers doing coverages will receive an additional $200 per coverage (unlimited) that will be added to their pay on the invoice.

Primary Care Fee Schedule

KLT services are reimbursed at the coverage rates listed below, in addition to travel time at the rate of $40 per hour, mileage (at the State rate) and lodging expenses.

Upon completion of the locum tenens coverage, the resident/faculty provider submits an invoice to the rural physician or hospital that includes all charges and information as to whom the check should be made payable. The rural physician or hospital sends the remittance for the coverage to Rural Health Education and Services — Kansas City office. If the remittance is for coverage provided by a resident, the check is forwarded to the resident. If a faculty member provided the coverage, the remittance is forwarded to that faculty member's departmental Foundation. The departmental Foundation reimburses the faculty member for providing the coverage.
