Pharmacology (PHCL) 700 Series Independent Study Courses
GUIDELINES
1. Eligibility:
Open to graduate students in the Nurse Anesthesia and Nurse Practitioners programs who are registered as University of Kansas Students. The 700 Series consists of seven (7) one (1) credit hour courses that in total provide a comprehensive survey of pharmacology. This is an instructor driven independent study program with use of learning objectives, electronic syllabus, textbooks, and computer-assisted instruction (CAI) via the world-wide-web network as primary teaching instruments. A two-exam format is used to assess mastery of the material and grades for each 1-credit course (PHCL 761-767). Students must be on campus for exams and reviews on the dates provided by their program. Consultation with instructor is available by appointment.2. Prerequisites:
Permission numbers are required for this course. PHCL 761 is a prerequisite for all other courses unless special permission is given by the instructor.3. Courses:

The learning objectives and electronic syllabi on the web are designed to serve as a study guide using (1) "Pharmacology Rapid Review" by Pazdernik & Kerecsen; Mosby (2007) provides a concise summary of pharmacology with 100 excellent USMLE-type Board questions plus access to www.studentconsult.com and (2) Katzung & Trevor’s Pharmacology by AJ Trevor, BG Katzung, & SB Masters; Lange; 8th Ed.; (2008). These books provide a concise information base that the student should be familiar with prior to working through the CAI Programs recommended for each 700 series course and also available via webCAI.For further information the student should use "Basic & Clinical PHARMACOLOGY" by Katzung or "Goodman & Gilman’s The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" by Bruton, Lazo, Parker, Buxton & Blumenthal available via AccessMedicine from the Dykes Library Home page of via URL: https://login.proxy.kumc.edu/login?URL=http://www.accessmedicine.com. All drugs in AccessMiedicine texts are linked to Clinical Pharmacology Online which contains details on current and investigational drugs such as prescribing information and indications, specific pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, contraindications, drug interactions, etc.; this is an excellent on-line resources.
6. Electronic Syllabus: The electronic syllabus was derived and edited from the PowerPoint presentations used for the Medical Pharmacology Course (PHRM 850). The following faculty contributed: Drs. Bunag, Levant, McCarson, Pazdernik, & Reed. These are Password protected. The User Name and Password will be provided by the instructor after enrollment in one or more of the courses.
7. Examinations and grades:
Students must pass a 50-question multiple choice examination for each of the one credit courses (PHCL 761-767). Students can take the exam two times. Only the high grade counts. Grades are assigned as follows:A = 86% or greater
B = 76 to 85.9%
C = 66 to 75.9%
