Education and Experience:

Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, Ph.D., 1962
Waite Research Institute, Adelaide, Australia (Postdoctoral Fellow)
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Adelaide, Australia (Research Scientist)
University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison, Wisconsin, (Senior Postdoctoral Fellow)
Wayne State University Medical School, Detroit, Michigan, (Assistant Professor)

Major Research Interests:

I have had 25 years experience with yeast cell envelopes. Subject matter has included both industrial and pathogenic yeasts, as well as the yeast-like organisms which cause secondary infections in patients with compromised immune systems. The latter group of microorganisms includes many dimorphic species which are of extreme importance in terms of morbidity and mortality for HIV-infected patients. The long-term goal of my research is to understand critical aspects of biochemistry, biophysics, and ultrastructure within these pathogens (grown in pure culture) and to find chemical ways of selective interference - in short, to propose better avenues of potential therapy for these infections. I also have a secondary interest in History of Medicine, which has yielded popular publications in Scientific American, British Medical Journal, Journal of the American Medical Association, and a widely praised book on the underlying illness of Vincent van Gogh.

Dr. Arnold's research has been adapted into two interactive medical teaching units which may be found here.  An article on his research, and these teaching units, was featured in a recent KUMC Highlight .
