The KU Medical Center comprises a 459-bed hospital, School of Medicine, School of Allied Health, and School of Nursing. In addition, the Medical Center supports a Research Institute and a Center for Continuing Education.

The Medical Center meets the needs of people who have emergency, acute or chronic conditions through state-of-the-art technology. Our services range from comprehensive primary care through to the highest quality specialty care. We provide extensive emergency services through the fully staffed and equipped emergency department, and the highly skilled trauma unit. Critically ill neonates are served by a mobile neonatal intensive care unit, that travels to rural Kansas to pick up infants in need, and a highly regarded Level III neonatal intensive care unit. The Medical Center transplant programs have given a new lease on life for patients in need of liver, kidney, cornea, bone marrow, skin and tissue transplants. A nationally recognized reconstructive surgery center, the burn unit, the KU Cancer Center, specialty care services for a number of neurological conditions, and an extensive elder care initiative are but a few of the other available services. Advanced technological support for diagnosis and treatment, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter, and hyperbaric chamber improve patient care and convenience.

Medical, nursing and allied health care staff have been pioneers in research that has improved patient care and led to many important advances in their respective fields.
With more than $41 million annually in outside grants from the Institutes of Health, private foundations, and other sources, KU Medical Center boasts nationally and internationally renowned researchers.
Our researchers conduct much of their work in the recently completed Lied Biomedical Research Facility, a $14 million structure that provides the sophisticated laboratory support needed for complex and varied scientific studies. Neuroscience research is a major commitment of the school, with imminent plans for acquisition of a PET scanner.
As a result of KU Medical Center’s innovative applications of telemedicine, patients in rural areas are no longer required to drive hundreds of miles for care. Through the use of a very active and growing interactive television network, patients and their caregivers throughout the Midwest receive leading edge medical, surgical, specialty clinic, and psychiatric consultation.
