The success of the Department of Psychiatry in meeting its key missions depends upon an excellent dedicated faculty.  Highly qualified faculty members are recruited, but ongoing professional growth at an individual level leads to continuous quality performance improvement for the organization.  All faculty members contribute directly to at least one and often two or more of the department’s key missions of education, advancement, science, clinical care, and other service.

To help faculty members become better at what they do, the program builds upon the medical school’s efforts to facilitate success in faculty development.  Part of this individual performance improvement process in values mentoring.

The Psychiatry Department Mentoring Process:

Role of the Chairman
The Department chair is responsible for assisting all faculty members with advice regarding professional development.  This happens with annual assessments, ad hoc advice, and strategic program planning.

Division Directors
Division directors are responsible for day to day faculty development.  These leaders support faculty members in the performance of their faculty responsibilities and to continuously improve performance.

Faculty Mentors
Assigned and selected mentors are key to success for many faculty members.  These individuals (usually more senior) offer useful guidance, advice, leadership and support to help individuals achieve professional success.

Department Promotion and Tenure Committee
The Department has a Promotion and Tenure Committee.  This committee is responsible for mid cycle and formal review of applications for promotion and/or tenure.  The report of this departmental group informs the Department chair and the Medical School’s Promotion and Tenure Committee on matters of promotion and tenure.

Professional Development Opportunities
The Department sponsors continuing professional education activities and opportunities for presentation and critique of research and educational product.

The Department’s education programs provide performance feedback from trainees.

Presentations at professional meetings, education programs, and participation in community service activities are encouraged and facilitated.
