Before leaving for a trip:
- Create the illusion that someone is home.
- Set lights on timers.
- Play the radio.
- Have neighbors maintain the yard and pick up the paper.
- Have front outside lights on photocells that activate in the evening and shut off at daybreak.
- Tell neighbors of your absence and encourage them to contact the police about any suspicious activity at your house.
- Make sure all entry points into the home are secure.
- Do not stop your mail or paper.
- If you have an alarm system, leave a current list of contacts with your alarm company in case your system activates. False alarms may be fined.
- Disconnect the garage door opener and lock the garage door.
- Turn off the water to the house to prevent rupturing of a hose or water line.
- Have neighbors check the house on occasion. This can create the illusion of occupancy. Also, a neighbor can identify potential problems and act immediately.
- Make arrangements to have the yard cut or snow shoveled.
While on your trip:
- Speak up if you think something is dangerous.
- Plan ahead for any problems you might encounter.
- Bring sufficient money for gas, food and shelter.
- Get all road and trail maps before the trip.
- Be sure an area is safe before exploring.
- Confirm reservations before leaving home.
- Know your traveling companions well.
- If you choose to drink, monitor your consumption.
- Don't drink and drive.
- Don't mix drugs and alcohol.
- Don't accept drinks from strangers.
- Avoid extra stress by discussing trip expectations beforehand with your friends.
- Do all things in moderation. Too much fun, sun and socializing isn't always good.
