Dear Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in our program. We provide a comprehensive curriculum with an emphasis on both the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation aspects of our field. Resident physicians are provided with a broad basis education to prepare them for any future PM&R practice. Special interests can be developed during the two month elective offered in the PGY-4 year.
Our faculty have a broad range of experiences in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with special areas of interest in electrodiagnosis, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, interventional pain, industrial medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, myopathies, orthotics & prosthetics, burns, stroke and both pediatric & geriatric rehabilitation just to name a few. The excellent patient population base is obtained through the University Hospital as well as our association with 2 Veterans Administration hospitals, a top children's hospital, and one private non-profit tertiary hospital in the local community.
To meet the mission of providing a broad based physical medicine and rehabilitation training, we designed our program not only to give the residents a diverse patient population but a strong didactic curriculum which ensures an excellent PM&R knowledge base. Approximately 4 to 6 hours per week are devoted to didactic lectures, most organized by the faculty but some organized by the resident physicians. Also, there is a resident research requirement that is supported by the department.
In addition to the daily rotation schedules there is an on-call requirement. Our resident physician call is primarily from home through phone coverage with a faculty supervisor also on-call if there are significant patient issues. Our residents take weekly call and the average call is 6-8 weeks per year. The resident physician is only required to go into the hospital if there is a significant patient problem that cannot be managed on the phone.
Again, thank you for your interest in our residency program. Although we are relatively small, I think you will be impressed with the quality of the PM&R program. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Sincerely,
