The University of Kansas Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program is a 3-year program beginning at the PGY-2 year. It offers an exciting variety of inpatient and outpatient training at university hospitals, VA medical centers and private hospitals. During their three years, residents rotate through the following facilities in two-month blocks:
Residents gain valuable experience on the inpatient service caring for a diverse patient population. During a typical two-month rotation on the 17-bed unit residents provide care for patients with traumatic brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord injuries, MS, arthritis, orthopedic joint replacements and multiple fractures. The medical center is a level one trauma center and the only academic facility for the entire state of Kansas ensuring a wide variety of exciting and challenging cases. In addition to inpatient activities, there is an active outpatient population concentrating on musculoskeletal problems, common physiatric procedures, inpatient follow-ups, and electrodiagnostic examinations (EMGs).
This facility is located in Kansas City, Kansas just one block west of the Missouri-Kansas border. It is accessed easily by taking the Rainbow Boulevard exit of the I-35 expressway, a major roadway in Kansas City.
Residents participate in primarily outpatient programs. The VA has a comprehensive spinal cord injury program as well as a large number of patients with amputations in the outpatient clinic. Residents gain valuable experience performing EMGs in the outpatient clinic.
This site also provides ample opportunities to do muscle, tendon, and bursa joint injections. Additionally, residents have the opportunity to assist and perform invasive spinal procedures such as epidurals, facet blocks, etc.
This hospital is located approximately 20 minutes east of the University of Kansas Medical Center, just south of the I-70 expressway.
Residents at this facility are primarily responsible for outpatient musculoskeletal activities including learning physiatric procedures. They also perform some EMGs and various injections at this facility.
This VA medical center is located approximately 30 to 45 minutes from the University of Kansas Medical Center in the city of Leavenworth. Although there are many ways to drive to Leavenworth, most residents choose to drive north on Kansas Highway 7.
Saint Luke's Hospital is a private non-profit, tertiary level one trauma center hospital that has been awarded the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) prestigious Magnet Designation, the highest honor and level of recognition ANCC awards to nursing services in national and international health care. It has been awarded a Top 50 hospital award winner named by AARP magazine. Additionally, The Stroke Center at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, Missouri is the only dedicated stroke unit in the region The Saint Luke's Stroke Center has served as a model for other hospitals developing such units.
During their two-month rotation, residents are actively involved in managing the patients on the inpatient rehabilitation unit and seeing inpatient consults with faculty. While at St. Luke's, resident physicians will work with community physiatrists who are part of our faculty.
This facility is located in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, approximately 10 minutes away from University of Kansas Medical Center by inter-city roadways.
Residents rotate through the only children's hospital in eastern Kansas and western Missouri under the supervision of three faculty with both pediatric and rehabilitation qualifications. There is a 10-bed inpatient rehabilitation service along with very busy outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation pediatric clinics. The faculty also supervise the day pediatric and adolescent programs at the Rehabilitation Institute, a large outpatient rehabilitation facility.
