Special Programs

Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic

Children with cleft lips and palates and related congenital anomalies are evaluated in the Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic. Required surgical procedures are provided by the Plastic Surgeon on the team at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Speech, hearing, orthodontic and social issues are coordinated either locally or in the child’s local community. Children are followed from birth to adulthood to assure that everything possible is done to facilitate these children becoming fully functional adults.

Cleft team evaluations are conducted on a monthly basis on Friday mornings from 8am-noon in the Sutherland Institute. The evaluation generally includes assessments by a Plastic Surgeon, Speech Pathologist, Orthodontist, Audiologist, Social Worker, and Nurse. After each team member has evaluated all patients attending the clinic on a given day, the team members meet and present their findings to each other. A coordinated, comprehensive treatment plan is generated for each patient that summarizes each team member’s findings. A formal report is sent to the patient’s local health care providers and to each family. Appointments can be made by calling the Team Coordinator, Patricia Cervantes, at 913-588-2000. Current team members include:

  • Plastic Surgeon: W. Thomas Lawrence, MPH, MD, FACS
  • Speech Language Pathologist: Jeffrey Searl, PhD
