Welcome to the website of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Plastic Surgery derives its name from the Greek word, Plastikos, which means ‘to change or mold’. The theme of changing or molding is the common thread that binds the often diverse problems managed by Plastic Surgeons.

Plastic Surgeons treat aesthetic concerns, congenital problems, traumatic injuries, skin cancers, defects created in the management of oncologic problems, hand abnormalities, chronic wounds and problems due to aging. In managing all of these problems, the role of Plastic Surgery is to change or mold in order to restore form and function.

The mission of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center is to provide high quality, cutting edge patient care, to educate residents and students in the art and science of Plastic Surgery in as effect a manner as possible and to perform novel research within the financial capabilities of the Department.

The Section has been in existence since the 1920’s and recently became its own standing Department in 2009.  The Department has had a Residency Training Program since 1943. It has a long tradition of excellence, and many of the past Section Chairmen, including David Robinson, MD, Frank Masters, MD, John Hiebert, MD and Ned Garrigues, MD, have been nationally recognized leaders in the field. The goal of the current faculty and staff is to maintain this tradition of excellence.
