Research Interests
I am currently working on a project involving the hindlimb representation of the primary motor cortex. Using stimulus triggered averages (StTAs) of EMG activity recorded from 20 muscles of the hindlimb, we are constructing a motor map of the hindlimb representation. We also measure the output properties of the hindlimb representation of M1 in terms of sign (facilitation or suppression), magnitude, latency and distribution of effects. Previously in our lab, research has been focused on the forelimb representation in M1, the supplementary motor area and the premotor dorsal area. With the data we are now acquiring on the hindlimb representation, we will be able to make comparisons with the forelimb representation. Preliminary results are already quite interesting!
Other Interests
I once enjoyed free time and an income that thoroughly supported it. Now I work longer hours and live on a budget. Change is good. But seriously, while I do spend long hours in the lab, I still find time to keep my sanity by devoting small bits of free time to very non-science oriented endeavors. I play soccer on a regular basis on a local rec team. I take a yearly backpacking trip with an old friend and his dog. Previous hikes have taken us to the John Muir wilderness, the Grand Canyon, southern Arkansas and more recently, Australia. And finally, I’ve just gotten into the life of the motorcycle enthusiast. I bought my first bike a few years ago and look forward to riding every day.
