About the University of Kansas

The University of Kansas is a major regional public educational and research institution with more than 28,000 students and 1,900 faculty members. The main campus in Lawrence, Kansas, an easy commute from the Medical Center, offers varied cultural attractions, as well as Big Twelve basketball and football.

The KU School of Medicine offers its medical and graduate students access to an excellent full-service teaching hospital and the opportunity to work with faculty members engaged in basic and clinical research. Approximately 175 students enroll each year in the four-year M.D. program. Basic Sciences are taught on the Kansas City campus, while clinical training is conducted in Kansas City or Wichita.

Graduate Studies

Graduate Studies at the School of Medicine, in addition to Physiology, include programs in Anatomy and Cell Biology; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Microbiology, Molecular Genetics and Immunology; Pathology and Oncology; Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics; and Preventive Medicine. Graduate level courses are often interdisciplinary, and include faculty from multiple departments. The Office of Graduate Studies at the Medical Center is a component of the University of Kansas Graduate School, which originated in 1896, and is responsible for supervising graduate work, setting admission standards, and recommending to the State of Kansas Board of Regents students who have completed degree requirements. In addition to the School of Medicine, graduate programs exist in the Schools of Allied Health and Nursing.

Library and Computer Resources

Dykes Library of the Health Sciences, a new and attractive facility, is among the finest health science libraries in the midwest. It has more than 150,000 volumes, 1,500 current periodicals, and an extensive audiovisual collection. It is fully automated with a computer-based catalog, terminal access to the computer catalogs of other Kansas and Missouri academic libraries, and compact disk databases including MEDLINE of the National Library of Medicine. In addition, national and international databases can be accessed through a School of Medicine file server linked to Internet.

The nationally recognized Clendening History of Medicine Library owns more than 26,000 rare and historical materials including first or early editions of important medical publications.

Student Services

The University of Kansas Medical Center offers a variety of resources and services intended to assist its graduate students. Included are the Office of Student Life, the Student Counseling and Educational Support Services, a campus bookstore, and Student Records and Registration. The Student Financial Aid Office provides information and application forms for loans, grants, and scholarships, and work-study opportunities.
