My research centers on the mechanisms of adaptation of intact animals to environmental hypoxia. Studies include the effects of exercise training, hypoxia, and acclimatization on systemic oxygen transport to tissues and microvascular function. Of special interest is the microvascular inflammatory response to hypoxia, a novel phenomenon described in collaboration with Dr. John G. Wood, which may have implications on acute altitude illnesses such as high altitude pulmonary and cerebral edema.
