Dr. Merrill Tarr wins the prestigious Kemper Award Building on his 41 year long academic career, Dr. Merrill Tarr wins the prestigious Kemper Teaching Award at KUMC. He lectures on membrane potentials, body fluids and cardiovascular physiology and serves as director of two modules in the medical curriculum - Cardiopulomonary and Renal-Endocrine. The students have recognized the quality of Dr. Tarr’s teaching and his dedication to education with several awards but it is also significant that for three years in a row the Cardiopulmonary module has been recognized by Student Voice as the best module of the first year curriculum. Also, according to the June 2009 SOM Office of Medical Education Report, the two highest scoring modules in the new curriculum based on student ratings were the Cardiopulmonary and Renal-endocrine modules - the two modules directed by Dr. Tarr. On behalf of the entire KUMC community we congratulate Dr. Merrill Tarr.

Merrill Tarr, PhD, a professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at KU Medical Center, was surprised on Tuesday to learn he was a recipient of a 2010 Kemper Fellowship. The annual awards, supported by the William T. Kemper Foundation and KU Endowment, are given each year to outstanding teachers and advisers at KU. Among those presenting the award to Dr. Tarr were Karen Miller, RN, PhD, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, and Paul Terranova, PhD, Vice Chancellor for Research.
Overview
Research programs in the department cover the range from analysis of genes to analysis of whole organisms and fall into three broad categories:
The common thread is that all programs endeavor to understand biological function in health and disease. Nearly all faculty members have served on national advisory committees to major funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and as reviewers and editors to major scientific publications. The department offers the Ph.D. degree, and the combined M.D./Ph.D. degrees in conjunction with the School of Medicine.
The faculty and graduate students participate in a variety of graduate level teaching programs in the Schools of Medicine and Allied Health. Extramural research support for fiscal year 2005 was over five million dollars from the NIH. The Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology ranks in the upper third of all physiology departments in the U.S. with respect to NIH funding.
