Landscape Services is responsible for maintaining all grounds on the KU Medical Center campus. This entails grounds maintenance, chemical applications, annual and perennial plantings, upkeep of existing landscape, and minor constructions and road repair. Landscape Services also works with other departments and organizations on special events: the Graduation Luncheon, the annual drive-through Flu-Shot service and various Auxiliary functions.
Landscape Services utilizes two 1-ton flatbed trucks, two 4-wheel-drive ¾-ton trucks with sanders and plows, one 1-ton box truck, one 5-ton dump truck and four Grasshopper riding mowers with snow removal accessories. These vehicles without the snow equipment are used year-round along with four self-propelled walk-behind mowers and other small engine equipment to maintain the grounds.
As with any use of heavy equipment, safety precautions must be taken. Landscape Services employees are provided with safety belts, eye protection, hearing protection, and gloves for hand protection. Landscape Services maintains full compliance with OSHA standards and procedures in addition to standards set by the University Safety Office.
Landscape Services provides litter removal. When special events are scheduled, the sponsoring organization is responsible for the cost of the cleanup.
Landscape Services provides snow and ice removal as needed. The initial priorities are listed below, after which the rest of the campus can be cleared as manpower is available.
When the snow starts during normal working hours, many of these areas can be worked on simultaneously. On an after-hours callback, the priority list will be followed as employees report for duty.
