Program: Kansas Recruitment Center
Cheryl Giles, MD had options. But as she started pinning down what she wanted in her life and practice, it became clear. With help from the folks at the Kansas Recruitment Center, the road she sought would take her to Emporia and the beautiful Flint Hills.
Dr. Giles joined the team at Flint Hills Community Health Center (FHCHC) in Emporia, Kan., in July 2009.
“At FHCHC I get to work in a primary care clinic with the ability to treat individuals of all ages in a great community setting within a supportive medical community.”
Dr. Giles graduated in 2002 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City. She grew up in Missouri but most recently was living in Iowa. She says she has always enjoyed the country having grown up on a crop/dairy farm and knows what it means to work when the need arises.
“Calving, weather conditions, planting and harvest time all have various time demands and require flexibility and creativity to meet the competing needs at hand. This was a good prep for rural medicine.”
Dr. Giles is excited to be working in a primary care clinic with a good patient population with interesting and diverse needs. She says at FHCHC she enjoys working with awesome colleges in a compassionate environment.
The Kansas Recruitment Center (KRC) seeks to enhance the quality and quantity of health care professionals in rural Kansas by helping health care providers, like Dr. Giles, find a home practice in Kansas. For rural organizations, the KRC provides job opportunity postings and placement assistance. For health care professionals, the KRC serves as a career service center by matching candidates with openings in the state. KRC is part of Rural Health Education and Services and the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Outreach Department.
