Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Erica Person, MD, in the KU Eye Center's Procedure Room

Comprehensive Ophthalmology at KU Eye is a dynamic clinic where every aspect of vision care is evaluated: from glasses or contacts to complicated eye diseases. A leading tertiary referral location for the State of Kansas, our comprehensive ophthalmologists detect and treat many rare eye diseases. Our state-of-the-art technology and equipment ensures accurate diagnosis and screening, such as for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. There is also a strong focus on treating eye diseases in patients with complicated health problems, partnering with the University of Kansas Hospital and Cancer Center, among others.

In addition to the ability to handle a variety of eye diseases, the board certified comprehensive ophthalmologists also treat common conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma. Often, cataract patients are referred to the main hospital because the patients’ health is complicated, or because of complexity of the cataract itself. Under supervision of faculty physicians, residents are often involved in the care of patients, presenting cases at educational Grand Rounds furthering collaboration and learning at all levels. The department also participates in clinical studies, working closely with the Neurology Department on testing new medications for Multiple Sclerosis, as one example.

To meet the ever-growing number of referrals, we are actively recruiting for another comprehensive ophthalmologist. Located off the main KUMC campus at 7400 State Line provides patients with easy access parking at a smaller facility, while maintaining all the benefits of KU’s renowned academic program.
