Important Notice to 2008 Residency Applicants

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology web site. I hope you find the information provided here helpful in deciding the best residency training site for you. We, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kansas University Medical Center, are committed to providing excellent training to our residents so that they may have a fulfilling career. Being a university-based program it allows our residents to care for a diverse patient population from the Kansas City Metropolitan area as well as rural area of Kansas. Our university setting offers each resident the opportunity to make independent decisions regarding patient care issues, interact with other residents and renowned faculty in their field, and participate in the education of medical students. We make every effort to plan a curriculum that will allow our resident to meet their educational goal through teaching, research and patient care.

To be trained in a University Medical Center is only one aspect of the training received here. Our program offers a diverse curriculum that exemplifies the mission of our specialty. Each resident rotates through other community hospitals and clinical settings in order to provide health care to the rural, under served and urban populations.

The obstetric and gynecology program provides residents with the opportunity to tailor their residency to their individual interests and future practice needs. We have sub-specialists from maternal/fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gyn oncology and general obstetricians and gynecologists who cover the breadth and depth of our field. With the scope of obstetrics, clinical gynecology and surgery, it allows the resident to learn the skills that will make them the physician they want to be.

The Kansas University Medical Center is also a Regional Center for research in reproduction techniques and perinatal medicine. Within our department alone, we have three research labs and five PhD’s committed to research. If your interest lies in the area of research, then our department is the place you need to be. We have many investigative studies being conducted by our staff physicians and PhD’s. This allows our residents to participate in the cutting edge innovation in our profession.

Our residents have a 100% passing rate in their Board Examination. They are very well trained clinically and surgically in order to provide high quality care to their patients as well as serving as a consultant to their colleagues in their respective community.

We, at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, are extremely proud of our graduates and welcome your interest in our program, your application and extend to you an invitation to visit our program and learn first-hand about the opportunities which exist for you here in obstetrics and gynecology. The house staff in this department as well as this institution is characterized not only by their high academic achievement, but by their enthusiasm, maturity and mutual support of our program. If interested in applying for a residency position in our program, please refer to the application process for instructions.
