Medical & Surgical Management of Miscarriage
We provide timely treatment
for each and every patient in a specialized and private outpatient setting. We
manage first and second trimester miscarriage utilizing a variety of methods;
a fertility control consultation is included with each encounter. Our physicians
will help you determine the best option for you.
- Medical Management of First Trimester Miscarriage
This outpatient non-surgical approach is offered only to women who are having
a first trimester miscarriage. A single medication is used to help
empty the uterus. The medication, misoprostol, is inserted vaginally
either by the physician while the patient is in office or by the patient
in the privacy of her home. Patients will experience cramping and bleeding
similar to a heavy period. Spotting and bleeding usually last for two weeks. In
order to ensure the uterus has emptied completely, the patient is asked
to return to clinic for a follow-up visit.
- Surgical Management of First Trimester Miscarriage
Patients electing to have surgical management may undergo the procedure in
the office. The procedure itself takes less than 10 minutes. Local anesthetic
is administered to reduce cramping and antibiotics are provided to prevent
infection. The patient may also expect to have a brief ultrasound
performed during or after the procedure to confirm that the uterus is entirely
empty. In the event of an abnormal pregnancy, the patient has the option
of requesting genetic testing on the pregnancy tissue.
- Medical or Surgical Management of Second or Third
Trimester Miscarriage
Patients
with pregnancy losses in the second or third trimester may also find assistance
through KU’s Family Planning Clinic. For patient safety and to
provide state of the art care for these patients, management is provided
either in the operating room at the KU Hospital or on an inpatient basis.
