“We are very proud to have Dr. Bonnel join the 65 NLN fellows inducted since 2007,” said Karen L. Miller, RN, PhD, FAAN, dean of the KU School of Nursing and senior vice chancellor of academic and student affairs at the KU Medical Center.
“Dr. Bonnel's NLN-funded studies, published and presented in numerous professional venues, extend online educational best practices,” Miller said. Bonnel developed the grant-funded Online Health Professions Educator Certificate, which serves as a model for multiple programs; and the Teaching with Technologies course was one of the first to be offered.
Selection as an Academy fellow is competitive, with applications reviewed by a panel of fellows that makes its recommendation to the NLN Board of Governors, the oversight body for the academy. Evaluations take into account applicants' contributions to innovative teaching and/or learning strategies; nursing education research; faculty development; academic leadership promotion of public policy that advances nursing education; and/or collaborative educational practice or community partnerships.
The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of outstanding nurse educators. Fellows support the mission of the NLN to promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce. They assist in the work required to prepare graduates from all types of nursing programs and serve as resources for new educators and those in clinical practice who hope to someday enter the ranks of nursing faculty.
