Ten Registered Nurses receive Nursing: The Heart of Healthcare Awards

The 16th Annual Nursing: The Heart of Healthcare Awards banquet honored 10 registered nurses Oct. 14, 2006, at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kan. The University of Kansas School of Nursing coordinated the event, which recognizes outstanding registered nurses in Kansas and the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. This year's 10 award winners were:

- Michele Correll, Meade County Health Department, Meade, Kan.
- Marlene Finney, William Newton Hospital, Winfield, Kan.
- Linda Hamm, Hospice Care of Kansas, Wichita, Kan.
- Glenda Holmes, Medical Associates, Manhattan, Kan.
- Kathryn McNeal, Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Manhattan, Kan.
- Sarah Mitch, CareStaf of Kansas City, Overland Park, Kan.
- Kelley Sanchez, Indian Creek Healthcare Center, Overland Park, Kan.
- Martha Sanderson, Crittenton Children's Center, Kansas City, Mo.
- Carol Smith, McPherson Memorial Hospital, McPherson, Kan.
The University of Kansas School of Nursing established Nursing: The Heart of Healthcare in 1989 to recognize registered nurses' contributions to their communities, patients and professions. Over the past 16 years, there have been 160 winners and approximately 5,000 nominations for the award.
Nominations are accepted from patients, patient's families, colleagues, employers, supervisors and the nurse's family and friends. A committee, composed of former award winners and health car and business leaders, selected the 10 winners. Every nurse who was nominated received a certificate of recognition.
