Robert Hudson, MD, left, and Barbara Atkinson, MD, congratulate Christopher Crenner, MD, PhD, at the investiture ceremony honoring him as the Robert P. Hudson/Ralph H. Major Professorship in the History and Philosophy of Medicine.

A physician with a passion for the history of American medicine has been invested with a new professorship at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

KU awarded Christopher Crenner, M.D., Ph.D., a historian and internist, the Robert P. Hudson/Ralph H. Major Professorship in the History & Philosophy of Medicine at a ceremony today. Crenner is chair of the Department of History and Philosophy and author of Private Practice. The book uses doctor-patient correspondence to explore the dilemmas created by new technology-driven medical practices during the early 20th century.

“Dr. Crenner draws upon a rich background in the medical humanities in his leadership of his department,” said Barbara Atkinson, M.D., executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center and executive dean of the KU School of Medicine. “We are fortunate to have faculty of his caliber.”

Atkinson told attendees at the ceremony that the $500,000 professorship was one of about 47 endowed professorships at the Medical Center. These positions have long helped the university retain exemplary faculty members, she said.

Dr. Crenner joined the staff at KU 1998 and was named chair of the department in 2004.

Several donors gave to KU Endowment to establish the Robert P. Hudson/Ralph H. Major Professorship. The professorship honors two faculty members who helped shape the Department of the History & Philosophy of Medicine.
