Dietetics and Nutrition Researcher Receives Midwest Dairy Council Endowment in Clinical Nutrition

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Debra K. Sullivan, PhD, RD, associate professor and chair of the Dietetics and Nutrition Department in the KU School of Allied Health, received the Midwest Dairy Council's Endowed Professorship in Clinical Nutrition on Thursday, October 29, 2009.

“We welcome Dr. Sullivan as our new endowed professor,” said dairy farmer and Midwest Dairy Association board member Bill Siebenborn. “Her teaching and research efforts will advance the state of nutrition education at the University of Kansas Medical Center and ultimately, impact positive health outcomes on a very broad scale.”

Sullivan, who has long been involved in dairy research, has initiated research into the effects that dairy foods have on metabolism, obesity and blood pressure. In support of her efforts, the Midwest Dairy Council endowment will fund her ongoing dairy research.

Established to enhance nutrition knowledge among healthcare professionals, the Midwest Dairy Council Endowed Professorship in Clinical Nutrition is a collaborative effort in teaching, community outreach and research. The endowment allows for the advancement of nutrition education and nutrition research so that professionals in dietetics and nutrition, medicine, nursing and exercise science are equipped with current and accurate nutrition knowledge upon entering their respective fields.

The Midwest Dairy Council is the nutrition education division of the Midwest Dairy Association and an affiliate of the National Dairy Council. Its mission is to promote a healthy diet through nutrition education and the use of dairy products to consumers, health professionals and teachers
