Overview

The 2001 IOM report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to develop next steps for reform of health professions education in order to enhance patient care quality and safety.  The IOM convened this summit in June 2002.  Out of this came a follow-up report, Health Professions Education:  A Bridge to Quality.  This follow-up report focuses on integrating a core set of competencies - patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and informatics - into health professions education.  A growing body of literature suggests that educating the next generation of health professionals in quality will require substantial faculty expertise to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes.  Yet many faculty express concern that they do not have the experience or tools to lead quality improvement efforts or to teach it.

Please come prepared to discuss the following questions:

  1. How can I integrate anything related to quality improvement into the topic(s) that I teach?  (As I plan syllabus revisions for next year, what can I do to integrate?)
  2. What are health professions graduates’ roles and responsibilities related to patient safety and performance improvement?  How do I prepare graduates to function in this environment?

At the completion of Part II of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the connection between professional knowledge and improvement knowledge that is required for practice-based improvement.
  • Recognize the importance of education, performance and practice-based improvement efforts being interprofessional.
  • Develop and focus an aim for an improvement project.

      • Jeff Radel graciously shared this: Jeff teaches a required course for the IGPBS and other graduate students at KUMC focused on how to present scientific information effectively in professional and public forums. Much of this information is available on-line, including a tutorial on poster presentations. He placed these tutorials in the public domain intentionally, so they can be accessed by anyone – so he said, "please feel free to make use of any information appropriate for your needs." Thanks Jeff!.
