December 2004 Lab Outing

panoramic view of Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge

Panoramic westward view of Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City, MO (about 1.5 hours North of Kansas City) from the hill in the picture below.

Darren Higgins from Harvard was visiting, and we thought we'd go bird watching for bald eagles up at Squaw Creek. So, after a hearty breakfast, we crammed into the luxurious "lab" minivan and drove about 1.5 hours north on I-29 to Mound City. It was worth braving the sunny, but chilly and windy weather: we saw over 50 eagles that day, swooping down on geese flocks on the lake or perched on the neighboring tree tops. And we even got some "hiking" in!
