Research Focus

Research Interests: Location and distribution of crossovers and gene conversions during meiosis. Genome assembly and annotation using long sequencing reads. Genetics.

As a Kansas City native I couldn't have been happier to be back home at the University of Kansas. After receiving degrees in Economics and Finance from Georgia State University I spent some time traveling the country doing computer programming consulting before coming back home to do post-baccalaureate work at Rockhurst University. I was then fortunate enough to join the MD/PhD program at KU Medical Center.When I wasn't in the lab or studying you could typically find me running on one of our many great local trails, pacing a local marathon or half-marathon, or putting on a footrace of my own, the Hawk Hundred.

My thesis work involved studying the distribution of crossovers and gene conversions during Drosophila melanogaster female meiosis, as well as understanding the structure and diversity of balancer chromosomes in Drosophila melanogaster. During graduate school I also worked on isolating and using cell-free DNA to look for mosaicism in women with non-mosaic Turner syndrome. During my third and fourth years of medical school I started using long sequencing reads (generally referred to as third-generation sequencing) to assemble various genomes, mainly in species of Drosophila.

I matched into a four-year combined pediatrics and medical genetics residency program at the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital. After residency and fellowship training I hope to establish my own research laboratory studying fundamental questions in genetics while also practicing as a clinical geneticist.
