Pilot Project Awards Announced


Pilot Project Grants were awarded to the following researchers:

  • Gregory Reed, PhD, Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology & Therapeutics


Program Overview

The Liver Center, the Department of Internal Medicine and the Cancer Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center plan to fund pilot projects for one year beginning November 1, 2009.  The goals of this funding are to promote translational research in liver disease, to promote collaboration between researchers and clinicians, and to promote optimal use of the Liver Tissue Bank.

Eligibility

Faculty level researchers are eligible to apply.  All translational research projects in liver disease are welcome; however, special consideration will be given to projects emphasizing:

  • Collaboration between clinicians and basic science investigators
  • Utilization of the Liver Tissue Bank
  • Translational research involving cancers of the liver and biliary tract
  • Using clinical resources of liver transplant programs
  • Applying laboratory based investigations to unique KUMC patient populations

Funding

Pilot grants are one-year awards of up to $50,000 starting in November 2009.

Application Process

A one half to one page letter of intent and an NIH format Biosketch are due by Thursday, July 30.  LOI’s should be addressed to Dr. Steven Weinman, MD, PhD, Director of Translational Research, Liver Center and include project title, aims, general methodological approach to the project, and impact on human disease. 

Only successful letters of intent will be invited to submit a complete application.  Applications will use NIH style forms with a 6 page limit on the experimental plan. Detailed information on the complete application process can be found at here.
