To bring together, on a cooperative basis, basic
science and clinical investigators to enhance the effectiveness of
conducting translational liver research and to build a first class
liver center.
Aims of Center
To enhance interdisciplinary cooperation among
funded investigators to conduct high quality research involving
etiology, treatment, and prevention of liver diseases and related
disorders.
To
provide resources and infrastructure to foster junior investigators
to initiate and conduct liver research.
10 year plan
A major area of interest to The Liver Center is
metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical
disorders that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the United States is calculated
as encompassing up to 25 percent of the population. A compromise in
liver metabolism plays a crucial role in the development of metabolic
syndrome. It is our goal to foster collaborative relationships between
clinical researchers and basic scientists to build an investigative
environment which efficiently and effectively addresses these important
human health issues. Our Center has nearly 40 researchers representing
7 affiliate institutions. Our 10 year plan includes development of
program projects, submission of joint research grants and to continue
the recruitment of outstanding investigators in both clinical and
basic research.
In essence, science is a perpetual search for an intelligent and integrated comprehension of the world we live in.
