Farewell to Dr. David Wilson

This week, we formally bid farewell to H. David Wilson, M.D., who has served as dean of the School of Medicine-Wichita since 2009. Dr. Wilson is leaving to take a position at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as a special assistant to the dean for educational development.

When we look back at Dr. Wilson's accomplishments over the past three years, there is much he can be proud of. As dean, he oversaw the expansion of the School of Medicine-Wichita campus from a two-year program for third- and fourth-year medical students to a full four-year program. His exceptional efforts to help the Wichita campus smoothly transition to a four-year program are helping KU Medical Center make progress on our goal to educate more physicians for Kansas. Dr. Wilson also helped lead the effort to raise $4 million to support the program's expansion. And during his tenure as dean, the school saw a significant increase in research activity.

We will miss Dr. Wilson's nearly four decades of medical education experience and his cheerful demeanor, and we wish him the best of luck with his new endeavors in Kentucky. There will be a reception honoring the leadership and service of Dr. Wilson on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 5-7 p.m., at the Wichita Art Museum.

In the meantime, we are looking forward to working with Dr. Garold Minns, associate dean for academic and student affairs in Wichita, who assumed the role of dean on Aug. 1. Dr. Minns is a Kansas native who graduated from the School of Medicine-Wichita and completed his residency and fellowship training on the school's Wichita campus. He joined the school's faculty in 1980 and served as chair of the department of internal medicine from 1994 to 2003. We know he will do an outstanding job in leading our Wichita campus.

On Sept. 24, 2012, KU Medical Center will implement an improved Human Resources/Pay system for all employees. The new system is aligned with KU's Changing for Excellence initiative to enhance business processes for greater efficiency and cost savings in support of the University's mission. It will also be more convenient for KUMC employees and will give them more control over their information. Although employees will change the way they report their hours, it will not change or in any way disrupt the way they get paid.

All employees must complete the online training for the new system before it goes live on Sept. 24. You can access the training here. KUMC will also hold training sessions on the new system. You can see the list of training dates/times on the KUMC events calendar.

KUMC Alumni Reunion Weekend is Oct. 5-6, 2012, and we're looking forward to welcoming alumni, guests, and friends back to campus. The Alumni Awards recipients will be honored at a special luncheon on Friday, Oct. 5. On Saturday, join us for tours and a BBQ lunch catered by Jack Stack. Giulia Bonaminio, Ph.D., associate dean of medical education, has been named a Master Scholar Award winner by the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE). The award recognizes an IAMSE member who has a distinguished record of educational scholarship.
