ASCEND Workshop Series

The ASCEND workshop series will be open to all graduate students and trainees that wish to participate. Attendance at all or most of the workshops is encouraged for those applying to the Experiential Learning Placement.  Please see the events calendar on the main ASCEND page for dates, time, location and to sign up.  AdobeConnect will be available at most workshops for those attending from a distance.  

  1. Goals, IDPs and Conversation Skills
    Participants will learn about the ASCEND program, gain skills for setting SMART goals and working with Individual Development Plans, and develop techniques for handling difficult conversations.

  2. Personal Inventories and Self Assessment Tools
    Participants will learn about using self assessment tools and personal inventories for career exploration, goal setting, and personal branding.

  3. Career Speed Dating
    Participants will have the opportunity to visit with several invited speakers from varying career backgrounds, including industry, academia, nonprofit, and government agencies. This unique event will allow attendees to have short discussions in small groups with each panelist in a 'speed dating' set up to allow exploration of many types of careers.

  4. Job Searches and Professional Networking
    Participants will learn techniques for launching a job search, including where to look for announcements, how to read an opening description, and how to research companies.  In addition, this workshop will touch on professional networking skills to ensure valuable contacts are available when conducting a search.

  5. Applying for a Position
    Participants will have the opportunity to learn best practices for the application process, including what documents to submit, etiquette for correspondence, and general time lines.

  6. CV & Resume Writing
    Participants will learn best practices for writing CVs and resumes.  Time will be allowed for peer-to-peer work-shopping and staff will be on hand to problem solve and advise.

  7. Interview Skills
    Participants will learn about etiquette, dress, talking points, and other skills for successful job interviews.

  8. Negotiating and Accepting an Offer
    Participants will learn about accepting and declining a job offer and negotiating and understanding salary and benefit offers.
