Packing Tips

Note: Be sure to review current carry-on regulations.

Learn about the climate in the area you are visiting in order to decide what type of clothing to take.  Also, consider the activities in which you will be participating as you pack. Try not to overburden yourself with luggage.  It is a good idea to take a small carry-on suitcase with personal items you would need for a one-night stay in case your luggage is misplaced. Pack valuables and items that could leak in the carry-on bag. The following is a list of items you may need depending on your destination, length of stay, the climate, and activities in which you may be engaged: 

  • Passport
  • Cash
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Air ticket
  • Traveler’s checks
  • Currency
  • Prescription medications and copies of the prescription
  • Extra eyeglasses and prescription
  • Contact lenses and prescription, solution, case, and drops
  • Favorite brands of personal items
  • Cosmetics
  • Deodorant
  • Nylons
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Pocket dictionary/phrase book
  • Guidebook and maps
  • First Aid Kit
  • A box of surgical gloves - if participating in clinical activities and in case none are available
  • Laundry detergent for hand washing
  • Money pouch
  • Flip flops for communal showers
  • Fold up umbrella
  • Protection against sunburn, including a hat or scarf, sun block, lip balm, and sunglasses
  • A set of dress-up clothes and shoes
  • A light weight jacket or sweater
  • Sleeping bag or bed linens
  • A mosquito net and repellent
  • A good quality pad-lock
  • A Swiss Army knife (must be in checked luggage)
  • A sarong
  • A flashlight
  • A small alarm clock
  • A voltage converter and appropriate plugs
  • Ear plugs and a sleeping mask
  • A water bottle and water purification tablets/water filter
  • Binoculars
  • A backpack cover
  • Zip lock bags
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Towel
  • Camera, film, batteries
  • Light day pack
  • Sewing and repair kit
  • Cord or string
  • A paperback book
  • Address book
  • Notebook and pen
  • Snorkel gear
  • Universal plug for sinks and tubs
  • Clothes that wash and dry quickly and easily
  • Swim suit
  • Some countries do not have fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss
  • Some countries do not have large clothes and shoe sizes (their XL may be equivalent to a US medium)
  • Conservative clothes (nothing sleeveless or above the knee) for visiting temples, museums, etc.
  • If applicable, white coat and stethoscope
  • Patience, an open mind, and a sense of humor
